Sports Jargon

Advance - a preview article of an upcoming game.

Recap - an overview of the highlights of a completed game.

Column - an opinion article on a topic of the writer's choice.

Feature - an article that brings out human element of athletes.

News Updates - small updates on teams, players, etc.

Sports keeps the focus on ACTION:

  • Transmit ACTION through variety
  • Transmit ACTION through photographs
  • Transmit ACTION through writing
  1. Blitz- specific players target the quarterback 
  2. Sack- a player takes down the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage 
  3. Uprights- part of the goalpost where you kick ball in-between 
  4. Birdie- play (a hole) with a score of one stroke under par.
  5. Eagle- scoring two under par
  6. Bogie- scoring one over par
  7. Triple Double- when a player records double digit numbers in three categories in one game
  8. High Heat- fast ball
Sports Cliches:
  • Burned the nets- can't miss
  • Capped the drive- score @ end of drive
  • Crushed the opposition- won by big margin
  • Booted the pigskin- kicked the football
  • Run roughshod- beat other team
  • Raised the curtain on the season- the season starts
  • The tide shifted- the game expectations change
  • Odds-on favorite- the team that everyone believes is most likely to win
  • Threw the Hail Mary pass- all players forward, quarterback prays for a catch
